Project Description
Chefchaouen from Fes: 1- or 2-day excursion
This is a long day out as a daytrip, but worth it! It takes you to the “Blue City”, one of the prettiest towns in Morocco, high in the Rif Mountains north of Fes. The excursion can also be done over two days, allowing you to spend the night in Chefchaouen – perfect for wonderful photo opportunities in the morning while the town is still quiet. The return journey on Day 2 takes in Meknes and the Roman ruins at Volubilis.

Daytrip to Chefchaouen from Fes
Your Sahara Atlas Tours driver-guide will pick you up at your hotel in Fes after an early breakfast. We begin by crossing the lush green northern plains and vineyards towards the Rif Mountains. Driving up through the beautiful scenery of their foothills, we eventually reach the famous “Blue City” of Chefchaouen just after midday. The town nestles between two peaks that give it its name, which means “the goat’s horns”, and its houses are painted an intense blue, highlighted by the pots of colourful flowers. You will have the afternoon to explore its pretty winding streets, with great cafés, craft shops, and antique stalls, while enjoying magnificent views of the Rif. We return in the late afternoon light to arrive back at your hotel in Fes in the evening.
2nd day extension:
Stay overnight in Chefchaouen so that you can explore the town in the morning, before the town is busy. It’s the best time to capture wonderful photos of the quaint blue-painted streets and squares. We then say goodbye to the Rif Mountains, descending through lovely scenery to cross the northern plains again. On the way, your Sahara Atlas Tours driver-guide will take you to the Roman ruins at Volubilis, the southernmost city of the Roman Empire. This is the most extensive and well-preserved Roman site in Morocco, famous for its brilliant mosaic floors. You will then travel the short distance to the Imperial City of Meknes. This is smaller and more relaxed than Fes, but still has a fascinating history. You can visit the Tomb of Moulay Ismail, Sultan of Morocco in the 17thcentury, and his magnificent stables, built to hold 12,000 horses! After this, just a short drive will take you back to your hotel in Fes.
