Vale do Draa

Explore Morocco’s Draa Valley, the longest river oasis lined with kasbahs, palm groves, and Berber villages. A must-see journey from Ouarzazate to the Sahara with Sahara Atlas Tours.

Draa Valley – Morocco’s Legendary Oasis

Stretching nearly 200 kilometers from Ouarzazate towards the Sahara Desert, the Draa Valley is one of Morocco’s most breathtaking natural and cultural treasures. Following the course of Morocco’s longest river, this lush valley is a ribbon of green palm groves, fortified kasbahs, and ancient villages set against the backdrop of red desert cliffs and arid mountains.

Often called the “Gateway to the Sahara,” the Draa Valley has been an important trade route for centuries, where caravans once carried gold, salt, and spices across North Africa. Today, it offers travelers a chance to step back in time and experience Morocco’s oasis culture, traditional farming methods, and centuries-old mudbrick architecture.

History and Traditions of the Draa

The valley is dotted with hundreds of kasbahs, many of which were built by the Glaoui family and other Berber dynasties to protect trade routes and farmland. Some are beautifully preserved, while others stand in romantic ruins, blending with the earth tones of the landscape. Villages such as Agdz, Tamnougalt, and Zagora offer glimpses into local traditions, with weekly souks, colorful crafts, and age-old irrigation systems that keep the palm groves thriving.

The Draa is also renowned for its cultural richness, where Arab, Berber, and Saharan influences come together in music, dance, and storytelling. During your journey, you may encounter Ahwach dances, artisan pottery workshops, and even camel caravans heading toward the dunes of Mhamid.

Things to See and Do in the Draa Valley

Traveling through the valley is a scenic journey full of contrasts: from lush date palm oases and fertile farmland to dramatic desert gorges and endless kasbah walls. Stop in traditional villages to meet locals, wander through souks, or hike into the surrounding hills for panoramic views of the river oasis winding its way through the arid landscape.

Many travelers combine the Draa Valley with a desert adventure, continuing south to Zagora or Erg Chigaga in Mhamid El Ghizlane , where the valley meets the Sahara dunes. Whether as a stopover or a dedicated route, the Draa Valley remains one of the most authentic and memorable experiences in Morocco.
