It’s magical to spend a night in the Sahara! Read here about our luxury desert camps, what to pack, and how we take care of your luggage overnight.
Sahara Atlas Tours only uses luxury desert camps in the Sahara. These are small, and located in the most peaceful areas of the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will stay in a private tent, beautifully decorated, with a comfortable bed, an en suite bathroom with hot shower, a separate WC, and a washbasin area. Dinner is taken in the restaurant tent, with delicious food full of local flavour. After dinner, there is usually a chance to gather at the open-air camp fire, and listen to some traditional Berber music played by the staff. And the clear desert nights are perfect for star-gazing!
To arrive at the camp, most guests trek by camel from the village of Merzouga. So it is very useful to bring a lightweight packable bag with you for your overnight necessities (night clothes, wash things, insect repellent, valuables etc.) and a bottle of water. Your camel driver will attach this to your camel’s saddle so you don’t need to carry it yourself. It is also more comfortable to wear long and loose or stretchy trousers rather than shorts for the camel ride. Wear any practical footwear: sandals, flat shoes or trainers are best. Meanwhile, your Sahara Atlas Tours driver-guide will keep your main luggage securely with him overnight, so you don’t need to worry about that.
On the way to the camp, you will usually stop for a break to watch the sunset – a very special moment. In the morning, the camp staff will wake you early if you wish, so you can see the sunrise over the desert as well. Guests who do not wish to ride camels can be transferred over the dunes to the camp in a 4×4. You can enjoy this adventure on any of our Sahara Desert Tours or as part of a longer Customised Tour.
